چکیده

[1] We measure expansion rate and bending in a 23-hour time series of acoustic images of the lower 25 m section of a buoyant hydrothermal plume rising from Grotto vent in the Main Endeavour Field, Juan de Fuca Ridge. We then calculate entrainment coefficient, the constant of proportionality relating mean inflow velocity at the plume edge to maximum mean upward velocity within the plume. The plume section alternately bends southwest at relatively high inclinations (37 ) and northeast at lower inclinations at irregular intervals twice during this time period, apparently driven by current reversals in the mixed semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The measured expansion rates (0.11–0.25 m/m) and calculated entrainment coefficients (0.07–0.18) are directly proportional to the degree of bending (R = 0.75). The loss of buoyancy flux related to enhanced mixing in a stratified environment during bending may contribute to reduction of potential rise height consistent with predicted ( 400 m) and measured (300–350 m) plume tops. Observations of the volume flux of a seafloor hydrothermal plume using an acoustic imaging sonar

[2] We present a 26 day time series (October 2010) of physical properties (volume flux, flow velocity, expansion rate) of a vigorous deep-sea hydrothermal plume measured using our Cabled Observatory Vent Imaging Sonar (COVIS), which is connected to the Northeast Pacific Time Series Underwater Experiment Canada Cabled Observatory at the Main Endeavour Field on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. COVIS quant...

A turbulent convection model with an observational context for a deepsea hydrothermal plume in a timevariable cross flow

[1] A turbulent convection model for a hydrothermal fluid discharging into a tidally modulated, stratified cross flow is used to investigate time-variable conditions in plumes, such as the one rising from Dante, a sulfide mound at 2175 m depth on the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. That plume is the consequence of the coalescence of 10 or more small, individual plumes from chimneys...

Acoustic Instrumentation for Imaging and Quantifying Hydrothermal Flow in the NEPTUNE Canada Regional Cabled Observatory at Main Endeavour Field

The National Science Foundation Oceanographic Technology and Interdisciplinary Coordination (OTIC) program funded the engineering development and connection of the sonar instrument package to the Endeavor node of the NEPTUNE Canada Stage 1 component of the Regional Cabled Observatory (RCO) in the Main Endeavour Field (MEF) on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge as part of the Ocean Observatories In...

Methane in aging hydrothermal plumes

Methane concentration and the stable carbon isotopic composition ( C–CH4) were measured in aging hydrothermal plume waters originating at the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge. CH4 concentrations decreased systematically from 600 nM at on-axis stations to 11 nM at a distal station 15 km off axis; background CH4 concentrations are 2 nM. CH4 behaves nonconservatively in plume waters and does ...

Microbial ammonia oxidation and enhanced nitrogen cycling in the Endeavour hydrothermal plume

Ammonium was injected from the subseafloor hydrothermal system at the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge, into the deep-sea water column resulting in an NH4 þ-rich (6177 nM) neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plume. This NH4 was quickly removed by both autotrophic ammonia oxidation and assimilation. The former accounted for at least 93% of total net NH4 þ removal, with its maximum rate in the ne...
